The future of vehicle imports to Australia is still up in the air - TopicsExpress

The future of vehicle imports to Australia is still up in the air with the latest Productivity Commission Report due out in August. Without pre-empting the findings of this report, the general feeling is that this will support an opening up of vehicle imports. What form and how long this will take remains to be seen. In an effort to have a clear voice on any future changes or Govt proposals, AIMVIA – the Australian Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association has been established, with the first meeting held last Monday. AIMVIA consists of a core group of dealers, workshops and others involved in the used imported vehicle trade and is designed to meet the needs of ALL stakeholders. This is a crucial first step in helping our industry establish its credibility and legitimacy in future years. Why is it so important? The IMVIA in New Zealand has achieved enormous success over the past 25 years lobbying their government and ensuring the best outcomes for their members. AIMVIA is keen to replicate this success in Australia, by creating a single, well-supported industry body with strong lines of communication to Govt. decision-makers. AIMVIA’s mission statement: “To support a fair and competitive imported motor vehicle industry” Initial goals for the Association will include: - establishing and promoting its position and policy on widening current legislation to allow a greater range of vehicles to be imported - industry advocacy on issues related to the supply of imported motor vehicles - develop strategies for improving current practices in the industry to help improve its image in the eyes of the general public How YOU can get involved ! Firstly, we need your help to spread the word. SHARE this information with anyone who is involved in the industry at any level; dealers, compliance workshops, customs agents, shipping companies, transport companies, mechanics etc. If their business stands to benefit from AIMVIA lobbying on their behalf, then their involvement and support is crucial to the association’s success. The best way to achieve the fairest outcomes for our industry is for us all to work together. With the federal government considering opening the gates a little wider for used imported vehicles, there has never been a more crucial time for us to put our case forward on a united front. We will keep you updated with progress and let you know further ways you can help in due course.
