The great Spanish soprano, Maria Barrientos (1883 ~ 1946) sings a charming Spanish piece, Yo quiero a un Hombre con toda el alma (literally means I want a man with all my heart; please correct me if I am wrong), from Manuel Caballeros Zarzuela, El cabo primero. Recorded for Fonotipia in 1906. I believe this would be one of the very early recordings of Zarzuela piece from this period. As always, she sings this piece with a full Spanish charm, beauty, and elan. Unfortunately, the piano accompaniment is pretty lousy ; early Fonotipia piano accompaniments can vary from very exquisite to exceedingly bad, and this is closer to the latter example, which, to be honest, is much more frequently found than the former. The record, which is the original Fonotipia pressing, is courtesy of Jim Shulman, who had kindly allowed me to transfer his record for this transfer. This is, as far as I know, cannot be found on any recent CD reissues, so I cannot thank him more. The other side, Barrientos rendition of Lascia Chio Pianga from Handels Rinaldo, is also a very early - possibly the earliest - recording of the famous aria, but it is rather disappointing performance, so I decided not to transfer it. Played on a Numark turntable with a 3.5mil TE stylus. The record is quite worn, especially at the beginning; I tried to attenuate the noise as much as possible by applying certain amount of EQ to reduce the rumble and high frequency noises, but there is a very audible swish which I cannot get rid of. Played at around 76.9rpm ; I dont have the score for this piece and I only played it by ear, so I might be wrong. Anyway, please enjoy! https://app.box/s/uyw7824ouuejb5q7ba9u
