The great relief of Baby R. Baby R was 7 months old when his midwife mother brought him to see me. She was very skeptical but she was at the end of her tether, her marriage was almost over due to lack of any functional life. Her son would not settle at all having been in and out of hospital for all of his life. He was and remains to this day a very large child and arrived into this world through the sun roof. His mum said that he just would not settle ever and never for more than 45 mins even whilst sleeping. When I examined baby R it was very difficult indeed as he contorted into every possible position but mostly into full extension. I was able to carry out a single exam of his feet into internal rotation and carried out a cranial adjustment as per the Cranial Fascial Dynamics protocol of Dr Jonathan Howat (of SOT world). That first night Baby R slept all night through but not a second night. After 3 or 4 more nights of poor sleep his mum rescheduled him in for a second adjustment. She was still very skeptical and did so through gritted teeth. The second adjustment facilitated 3 nights of near normal sleep. After each adjustment the period of “good” behavior increased until we were able to go a whole month between adjustments. I believe a lot of mums with tricky kids harbour a deep sense of guilt that in some way, they might have contributed to the current behaviour. It was only after about 6 months that she came clean about all the tests that baby R had had and how close they were to undertaking a completely unnecessary surgery on his Pyloric Sphincter. This is one of those cases that never fails to make me excited about our beautiful profession.
