The group stages are over, and now its time for the do-or-die - TopicsExpress

The group stages are over, and now its time for the do-or-die sudden death of the knockouts to begin. When the groups were drawn, many thought that Chile didn’t stand a chance of qualification, having been drawn with the 2 finalists of last year’s edition, Netherlands and Spain. However some solid performances have seen Sanchez and his teammates get through to the last 16. Their reward…a clash against the hosts a…Brazil!!! Brazil will definitely have to improve, having gotten past Croatia in controversial fashion, drawing against Mexico, and beating eliminated Cameroon in a match which some dubbed “the worst Seleção performance ever”. 4 goal Neymar, Thiago Silva, Fred and the Samba Boys face off against Sanchez, Aranguiz, Vidal and the rest of the red hot Chileans…and this could be a cracker!!! TEAM NEWS -> David Luiz suffered a slight injury in training but should be ok. Gary Medel is struggling with a muscle injury and is doubtful Vidal, Charles Aranguiz, Francisco Silva and Eugenio Mena (Chile) and Thiago Silva, Ramires, Neymar and Luiz Gustavo (Brazil) are all one yellow card away from suspension. History is on Brazil’s side (Played 68, Brazil Wins 48, Draws 13, Chile Wins 7, AND Chile have lost all four of their World Cup matches against fellow South American opposition, AND they have never beaten the Seleção on Brazilian soil, losing 20 and drawing six…AND the Seleção are now unbeaten in 40 successive matches in Brazil (having last been beaten in a friendly 12 years ago!!!), however attack-minded Chile are without a doubt currently on much better form than their South American counterparts, and their morale is sky high. THIS IS GONNA BE A CRACKER!!! POSSIBLE FORMATIONS -> Brazil (4-2-3-1): Júlio César; Marcelo, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Dani Alves; Luiz Gustavo, Fernandinho; Neymar, Oscar, Hulk; Fred. Chile (3-4-1-2): Claudio Bravo; Gonzalo Jara, Gary Medel, Francisco Silva; Eugenio Mena, Marcelo Díaz, Charles Aránguiz, Mauricio Isla; Arturo Vidal; Eduardo Vargas, Alexis Sánchez. OUR PREDICITION -> Brazil to make it through by a single goal ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Much has been said about Luis Suarez these past few days, with the Uruguayan getting a huge ban from both club and country football after he decided to nibble on Chiellini’s shoulder, so much so that very little was said about the fact that Costa Rica topped a group which saw both England and Italy face early exits. Now the Uruguayans have to get their heads in the game and fight that little bit harder if they want to stand a chance of repeating their success the last time the World Cup was held in Brazil. José Pékermans Colombia have thrilled the crowds with some great attacking football, topping the group with 3 wins in as many matches!!! It’s Los Cafeteros vs Celeste…and the winner of this all-South American clash faces the winner of the previous match, guaranteeing an all-South American quarter final!!! TEAM NEWS -> Colombia made eight changes for their final group match, having already qualified, but all 8 players are expected to return to the team for this clash. Colombia’s only doubt is whether Teofilo Gutierrez or Jackson Martinez will lead the line. Uruguay’s Tabarez may use Edinson Cavani as a lone striker, otherwise 35 year old Diego Forlan will take Suarez’s place. Uruguay captain Diego Lugano could again miss out with a knee injury Uruguay have the better head to head record (Played 38, Colombia Wins 11, Draws 9, Uruguay Wins 18), however they have only met ONCE in the World Cup, with Uruguay winning that match 2-1 back in 1962, They have, however, won six of their last eight encounters with Colombia. The bad news for Uruguay is that Luis Suarez has missed two games at the World Cup since 2010…and Uruguay lost both those matches… POSSIBLE FORMATIONS -> Colombia (4-2-3-1): David Ospina; Pablo Armero, Mario Yepes, Cristián Zapata, Juan Zúñiga; Carlos Sánchez, Abel Aguilar; Víctor Ibarbo, James Rodríguez, Juan Cuadrado; Jackson Martínez. Uruguay (4-4-2): Fernando Muslera; Álvaro Pereira, Diego Godín, José María Giménez, Martín Cáceres; Cristian Rodríguez, Egidio Arévalo Ríos, Nicolás Lodeiro, Álvaro González; Diego Forlán, Edinson Cavani.
