The harsh rocky shore of Keweenaw creates quite the hazard for incoming boats and ships. In the 1840s, the Copper Harbor Lighthouse was built. The original stone structure was replaced in 1866 by a brick building that still stands proudly. Built on a hilly area, stairs lead from this lighthouse into a wooded landscape. Although lighthouse keeping was a lonely business, the keepers were not alone. Scurrying amongst the woods, you can find a variety of animals big and small, including chipmunks. Here you can find two types of chipmunks; the Eastern Chipmunk and the Least Chipmunk. During my visit, I encountered the Least Chipmunk using the pathway to get to his own destination. You can identify the Least Chipmunk from the Eastern Chipmunk easily by the stripes on its back and its size. Least Chipmunks (picture courtesy Wikipedia), are the smallest species of chipmunk and their stripes run all the way down their backs to their tails. They have 5 dark and 4 light stripes. Eastern Chipmunks’ stripes fall short of the tail and they have 5 dark stripes and 2 light stripes. Wild! #wildandscenicwednesday
