The headquarters of Aniocha Local Government and home town of the Minister of Finance, Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala - Ogwashi-Uku - Delta State, has virtually been in darkness since 2010. PUNCH Metro learnt on Tuesday that some Ogwashi-Uku indigenes were concluding plans to sue the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for “illegal money collected for power supply that was never supplied to the community”. The indigenes, under the aegis of Beacon Club, said the blackout became worse in 2012 when the colonial town did not get power for 10 hours. Chairman of the club, Mr. Joseph Ikem, said, “This year, there have been sporadic flashes usually lasting less than 10 minutes in some quarters of the town. For the past four months, there have been no flashes at all.” He noted that it was unfortunate that power supply in the area had gone down beyond redemption. He said the economic activities in the community had crumbled, while students of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, who were also affected by the outage, now resort to the use of torches and generators. The chairman said the zonal manager of PHCN was summoned to Obi Chukwuma Okonjo’s palace in 2010 to explain the cause of the protracted blackout but the situation had not improved till date. Ikem added, “The Ogwashi-Uku community has agreed to take court action against PHCN. However, we have also decided to mobilise for both local and international funds to enable us to generate electricity for ourselves.”
