The heart of community is theatre; a fact exemplified by Abilene’s very own ACT. Abilene Community Theatre is the geographical heart of the city. Beckoning all who drive by with a glittering marquee, ACT welcomes all to entertain and be entertained. For more than 60 seasons a handful of the city’s most passionate story-tellers have kept the doors opened through countless hours of devotion to performance arts. Large scale musicals, historical dramas, comedies and tales of romance have all been represented on the stage. Ran entirely by volunteers, ACT is dependent on the passion of those who donate their time, money, and energy to live performance. A series of difficulties resulted in ACT taking a year hiatus, with this season being the theatre’s big return. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, an adaptation of the novel by Ken Kesey, debuts this Thursday, bringing with it new blood to the stage. Joining director Pam Joines and ACT veterans Susan Steele (Nurse Ratched) and Jefferey Castleberry (Harding) are theatre newcomers such as Leo Garcia (Chief) and Don Kirby (Scanlon). ACT welcomes participants from all walks of life. Cuckoo’s Nest is a prime example. The cast is made up of Taylor countys own; parents, students, blue-collar, white-collar, no-collar, civilian and military. Some have devoted their lives to theatre. Some stepped into the theatre for the first time at the audition. Join us this weekend and next for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The show runs Thursday-Saturday each week; doors open at 7:00pm and the show begins at 7:30. Help keep ACT alive. Keep the heart of Abilene beating for years to come. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never auditioned before. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never ran lighting equipment or a sound board. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never built a set or stepped on a stage. Nothing you ever do will provide such a huge reward for such a small investment. The heart of theatre is community. Without the devotion of the community there wouldn’t be theatre. Live theatre provides an once-in-a-lifetime experience. Every show is wholly unique. When the run is over, the performance lives only in the memory of those who lived it. We want nothing more than you to live it with us.
