The history of the newspaper byline came about during the American Civil War....the reason being that the military wanted to hold the writer to a higher standard if they lied or if the generals were terribly misquoted. Now with the Internet and social media there are far too many journalists, bloggers, etc that receive or post bylines under false pretence.... lying outright as they continue to plagiarize. It was brought to my attention by a journalism student a while back that a few local journalists in Fort McMurray publications have and continue to plagiarize. Be it a few paragraphs from other sources, changing only one or two words, it is still not their work. Words, sentences and paragraphs were stolen from such sources as theguardian and imdb In one local publication an entire feature article...all of it verbatim...was basically a paste and cut with the writer putting their own byline on top. Ive been in this bizz since 1975 and consider this a moral crime and unethical. These journalists know who they are and should be ashamed.
