The honeybees are very active today. What a joy it is to observe - TopicsExpress

The honeybees are very active today. What a joy it is to observe their behavior both in and out of the hive! I saw several doing waggle dances, and noticed they were bringing in a pale yellow pollen. What was interesting was some of the bees had considerably more pollen in one basket than another. Wouldnt this throw them off balance when they are flying, and how do they compensate? Inside the hive, some bees were carrying a pollen ball in their mouth, which they sometimes dropped to the floor of the hive, with a plink sound. Was the pollen dry and not sticky? Where did it come from? Some retreived it, some left it lying there. Will it be there tomorrow? Saturday, visiting naturalists observed many honeybees that looked like they may have been gathering fungal spores from fresh sawdust. Their baskets appeared to be empty. At home, I have had them gathering around my bird feeders, kicking out millet and corn pieces and even picking up sunflower seeds. They seemed to have a light grey dust in their baskets. What do you think? There is so much to learn!
