The hot ticket in town is the exhibition at LOrangerie; works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. ( For you former SATC fans, this was the Museum where Carries last Bo, played by Baryshnikov, was having a show.) The passionate and politically charged (albeit tortured) relationship between Frida and Diego, fired up amazing work. That little Museum in the Tuileries seemed hardly big enough to hold the talent represented by these two. Sometimes really beautiful, powerful work is born out of pain, as we know... The fact that Frida Kahlos works are comprised largely of self portraits, caused me to mull over my own contention that for me to pass time filling up my canvases with my face would seem very self indulgent...Ive done lots of quickly sketched self portraits over the years, just as stretching exercises.... But I always think, Wow; what could there possibly be in a self portrait, that anyone would find remotely interesting? Ill put the question out, for comment...
