The human body. Cells in the body are continuously renewed. No cell in your body is more than seven years old. Taste buds are replaced every ten days! Electricity. Electrons don’t zip down an electric wire at the speed of light. No, they bumble along the wire at the speed of spreading honey. Gravity. Isaac Newton, the greatest scientist of all time, thought that the reason for Jesus coming to Earth was to operate the levers of gravity. Gas. The word “gas” was coined in 1600 by a Dutch chemist called Van Helmont. It’s the most successful ever invention of a word by a known individual. He also coined the word “blas” to describe astral radiation – not quite so successful. Telepathy. In the Sufi faith, the Sufi masters are all telepathic (allegedly). They use their telepathy to send powerful signals to the rest of us that telepathy doesn’t really exist. Radio waves. Heinrich Hertz, who discovered radio waves, was once asked what the point of them was. His answer? “I’ve no idea but I guess someone will find a use for them someday”. Time. It maybe important to most of us but many modern physicists ignore it because it plays havoc with their neat equations. The universe. There are 100 billion galaxies in the universe. We can only see 5 of them. The meaning of life. The poet W. H. Auden helpfully suggested this. “We are here on Earth to help others. What the others are here for, I’ve no idea”.
