The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all. - Arvo Pärt The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (b. 1935) began his career influenced by Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Bartok, and the musical experiments of Arnold Schoenberg. By the late 60s, he was viewed with disapproval by Soviet authorities and was in despair about his serious composing. He sought inspiration studying the choral music of the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1976 he began composing again in a style he called tintinnabuli, from the Latin word for sounding bells. His works have had great popular and critical success, and have been cited as an influence by a wide range of musicians: Keith Jarrett, Peter Gabriel, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., and Bjork, to name a few.
