The hurricane destroyed stretches of road that connected the southern peninsula to the north, making auto traffic out of the area impossible. With Los Cabos international airport still closed, tourists were being flown out on military planes. Some 685 U.S. travelers were flown to Tijuana on Tuesday, then taken to the border to return home. The Mexican military continued airlifting some of the area’s estimated 30,000 stranded tourists on Wednesday, sending people to Tijuana and Mazatlan, where Customs and Border Protection officers are helping with their transfers and lodging. “As travelers arrive, CBP is processing those travelers through the pedestrian facilities at both ports of entry,” said Angelica DeCima, an agency spokeswoman. “CBP has set up a customer service area to provide assistance to the travelers on a variety of needs such as transportation options, hotels, and airport information, etc., in an effort to facilitate their needs and ease their concerns.” To get information from the state department about airlifts, people can email [email protected]. An automated response provides contact numbers, instructs people to register with the State Department, and says, in part: “The Mexican government has begun military evacuation flights from San Jose de los Cabos International Airport, Los Cabos Airport, and La Paz Airport. U.S. citizen travelers and residents should assess the safest route to the nearest airport and move there expeditiously during daylight hours. For additional information on these evacuation flights, please contact local authorities.”
