The ice bucket challenge has hit the U.S. by storm. Like it or hate it, the movement has raised a ton of donations for research toward ALS, a terminal, progressive neurodegeneratlve disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord. For those of you who dont really know why youre dumping cold water on your head, the #icebucketchallenge started after Peter Frates, a former Boston College baseball player, was diagnosed with the debilitating disease in 2012. Friends and family started the challenge as a way to raise awareness and funds. Frates, 29, is now paralyzed, eats through a feeding tube and cannot talk. I want to make it so clear that this is to raise awareness for what the disease is, Frates wife, Julie, told Elle Magazine. Not only do we not have any kind of treatment, we don’t even know what causes it. Just for people to know the severity of the disease and what we’re up against is all we can ask for. And for all you ice bucket challenge eye rollers, the numbers speak for themselves. According to the ALS Foundation, its national office has raised a total of $1.35 million from July 29 to August 11 of this year. Thats compared with $22,000 raised during the same time period last year. “The ALS Association just couldn’t be happier with the visibility that this is bringing to our disease, ALS, and the ALS movement,” Barbara Newhouse, national president of the ALS Association, told WBZ. The Daily Saint got the challenge. We donated to the ALS Association and then took our own spoofy spin on the viral movement. ;)
