The idea of brazil. We averted our eyes, as brazil suffered humiliation in an astounding manner. As a distraught coach asked for forgiveness. As anguished men tried desperately to hold on to the myth that fell away revealing their mediocrity. But even as we analyse this undignified failure we must continue to believe in the concept of brazil. The game that is more than just strategy, science, precision, power and organisation. Something more intangibly and indelibly moving. Like poetry. Or a sunset. Or the African mara. Or the music of windchimes. Something more magnificent than club rivalry and statistics. More inspirational than player prices and rewards. Something that we long for and ache for every four years. Technology has elevated this game, its players and enriched our viewing experience. Globalisation has brought amazing talent, teams and turks from many geographies. And every German ball that smashed into the Brazilian net that night wiping away records, creating new data in its wake showed us the heights this game can achieve. Perhaps we will not be able to look at Brazil quite the same way ever again but we must never do them the disservice of ridicule. To belittle the nation that has given us so much football joy, that has always, with generosity shared the secrets of their footballing art and soul....to turn away from them would be the most heinous football crime of all. Brazil will surely recover from the shame of the lost game but they will never forget the way we make them feel about the idea of brazil
