The idea of first world countries offering places of resettlement came about many years ago in recognition of the fact that it is the developing and poorest countries of the world which already host huge numbers of refugees within their borders. Australia was once a proud country of resettlement options for refugees, because we wanted to do our share of carrying the burden of refugees around the world -given that demands on our own country for asylum are small compared to the millions of refugees seeking asylum in places like Kenya, Ethiopia, Thailand, Lebanon, Egypt etc. Australia still has a very small number of people coming to us looking for asylum, in world terms. For Mr Morrison to suggest that it is not just up to the first world is breathtakingly ignorant.
