The idea that addiction is strictly a disease similar to other physical ailments is deeply problematic. It is a reductionist perspective without grounding in indisputable research or an openness to the fullness of human ontology and social factors. Addiction is a systems problem. While there is some genetic component involved in addiction, it is not the whole picture. It doesn’t account, for example, for the prevalence of addiction among Native Americans – and more importantly it allows us as a society to abdicate our responsibility for traumas which have been inflicted on generations of marginalized people and resulted in numerous tragic social crises and rampant addiction issues.
