The idea that dogs can chew on bones is very popular however this can cause serious injury to your pet. Bones of any size are not safe and can end up with a trip to your veterinarian. Bones can get stuck in the esophagus, windpipe, stomach, and/or intestines. They can cause injuries to the mouth, tongue or teeth. One injury we recently saw here at HVM was a broken molar due to chewing on bones. In the first picture you can see swelling due to an underlying infection and in the second picture you can the broken section of the molar.
