The intelligence of the conscious and of the unconscious I - TopicsExpress

The intelligence of the conscious and of the unconscious I understand that heuristics (gut feelings, rules of thumb...) are suitable for decisions under uncertainty and rational or logic decisions are optimal in decisions under risk. This is the normative approach. The descriptive approach reveals that test subjects mostly decide according to different heuristics regardless of whether there are risks or uncertainty. Kahneman established a cognitive basis for common human errors that arises from heuristics and biases (prospect theory). Gigerenzer in contrast identified useful heuristics i.e. emotions or rules of thumb which are faster and more successful especially in sophisticated tasks and decisions under uncertainty. No matter what the task and the answer is, men always decide emotionally and give logical (or other) reasons in hindsight. The intelligence of the unconscious is the determining factor. Analogous results were found in experiments of neuroscience concerning the time sequence of very simple behavior (Libet, 1983; Haynes et al. 2008). The questions is who or what decides: Mind or gut feeling? And is there a free will involved? Are there two brain networks (Szalavitz, 2012): One that determines the overall value and another that guides how you ultimately behave?
