The inter-testamental period Before and during the inter-testamental period lsrael/Judah moved from having been an independent kingdom (even a regional force under David and Solomon) to a small provincial entity, subject to foreign power. For most of the inter-testamental time Israel was subject to foreign empires, except during the short period of the Hasmaneans. By the time Jesus was born, Judea, Samaria and Galilee were insignificant provinces in the much larger scheme of things. The world prepared!! Although the prophetic voice of God was silent, he was still at work, as can be seen in the following. The Jewish diaspora or dispersion ensured a wide spread of Jews and Judaism in the world. The Greek language became the lingua franca of the first century AD world; it made preaching easier and the Gospel more accessible. The Roman infra-structure, including the systems, international travel, Roman citizenship and relative peace (pax romana) provide safe travel to Christian missionaries. The Jewish Messianic expectations ensured that many Jews were ready for special visit from God.
