The irony of the sporting culture in India has been that most of the international sports played in India had became synonymous with the icon players of the game.Like cricket became synonymous with Sachin, football with Baichung Bhutia,Hockey with Dhyan Chand,Tennis with Paes/Bhupati/Sania,Badminton with Saina. But today things have changed.New talents have come forward and shown their mettle and taken their games beyond one or two cult figures of the game and the realms of icon worship. The talent pool is diversified in many sports including athletics, gymnastics and professional games like golf.Though we have just touched the tip of the iceberg as of now and have a long way to go to become a front runner in several sports, but when you see new talents performing well,it does give us a hope. For instance,PV Sindhu at just a tender age of 19 assuring herself two consecutive medals in the World Badminton Championships.I know these developments have taken a long time but initiatives like Kabaddi League reviving a traditional sport and upcoming ISL will keep good balance between our traditional and contemporary sports culture.Building world class infrastructure, talent hunt in entire regions of India whether urban or rural and proper training and coaching facilities early to prospective talent, corporate promotion will take India forward. We all want India to win plenty of medals in Olympics and to see India play in the FIFA WC,dont we?
