The lakes of Udaipur are an engineering marvel which was constructed at the time when modern scientific techniques for construction of the reservoirs were not available. Despite it under the able guidance and far farsightedness of the erstwhile ruler of Mewar led by Rana Lekha (AD 1382-1421) Udai Singh ji, Raj Singh Ji 1, Jai Singh and Mahrana Fateh Singh ji(AD 1884-1930) just to name the few, some of the most amazing and artistic pieces of engineering took their shape in the form of Pichola, Dudh Talai, Goverdhan Sagar, Kumaria Talav,RanSagar, Swaroop Sagar(Kalaliya Talab) Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar, Badi Talav, Madar, Rajsamand and Jai Samand lakes. Among all these lakes the main lake is Pichola on the west of the city of Udaipur which is 4 km long, 2.4 km wide and the catchment area is 144 sq.km The construction, design and location of these lakes is such that each lake acts as a filler for the other lake ie when one lake gets filled, its surplus water can be released to the other lake, thereby maintaining the water balance of each of these lakes.These lakes have been the lifeline of the city of Udaipur and other parts of Mewar for the past 450 years. According to Shriji Amarsinghji Mewar the 76th custodian of the House of Mewar, the lakes of Udaipur are unparallel and unique globally. He considers them as seven sisters viz. Pichola, Dudhi lake, Goverdhan Sagar, Kumariya Talav, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar and Fateh Sagar. It is the charisma of these lakes that continues to attract thousands of tourists both from India and abroad to this city. Rightly called the City of lakes, the world over. On the contrary the water resources in Jammu and Kashmir became the first target of our most incapable and corrupt government mostly from 1976, when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah came to power again in 1976.
