The last time I remember being this elated about a victory was in 1996. The T20 as much fun as it was, especially beating the Indians didnt bring much joy as the 1996 win. When Eranga bowled that penultimate ball of the day short , which in turn targeted Andersons throat like a homing beacon, I actually only remember his awkward parry. I cant remember Herath taking the catch. I cant remember our celebrations. I only remember running around my room and texting the whatsapp groups that I knew were watching the match at that moment. It has taken about half a day to reflect as to why it brought me such joy. That short ball is now embedded in my mind as much as that glide to third man off Arjunas bat. I think it means so much more because it was a short ball. The short ball which was supposed to be our demise. Them picking four fast bowlers assuming they can just roll us over. The statements of glorified county attack and the assumption that teams like Sri Lanka (as per Joe Root) will just succumb to the mighty English. I think the fact that it was the short ball that got the final wicket after so much has been said was akin to Ranathunga hitting the winning runs off Australians in 1996.
