The latest drama in the Apple universe comes to us today because of one thing: a fingerprint. Firstly, there was the news that hackers can “fake” (or steal, really) your fingerprints. Secondly, there was news that Apple may begin to store users’ fingerprints on iCloud. According to Jan Krissler, a notorious European hacker, fingerprints can be “stolen” by taking a very high resolution photo of someone’s hands. He claims he can obtain usable and accurate fingerprints by taking photos of someone up to nine feet away with a high resolution camera. Unfortunately for us, we frequently opt to move away from the traditional 4-digit password and toward touch-ID unlocking. Apple pay uses touch ID to confirm purchases as well. While Apple devices do have secondary security features this is still a little freaky for most people. It seems likely that this will be the next controversy over security that Apple faces. People seem largely unsure about the accuracy of fingerprint technology even though it’s been around since the 90’s. The second fingerprint news comes from the idea that Apple would like to begin storing users’ fingerprints on iCloud so that they can be used on multiple devices. Apple has claimed several times that it does NOT currently store the fingerprints of users. There’s the argument that this is one step too far- we are already constantly providing data about ourselves to modern technology companies. There’s also the argument that if you have nothing to hide privacy shouldn’t really concern you. Where do you stand?
