The latest in the “food at school” story - I’m not pursuing - TopicsExpress

The latest in the “food at school” story - I’m not pursuing major school-wide change but will focus on my kids’ classrooms next year, BUT I had to make a big decision this week. My son is an avid reader and racked up over 1,000 “Reading Counts” points (the year goal is 200 to put that in perspective) and the librarian always gives the whole class a treat in honor of anyone who tops that number. She emailed me to see what I was comfortable with saying “I know you have feelings about this” (which made me a little nervous that I have a bad rep in the teacher’s lounge already, but I think she really respected what I was trying to do previously). The problem - she had already talked to my son and he chose ice cream. Am I going to crush that and say, “Hey, honey, let’s have apples!” No. Here’s my ‘middle ground’ solution: 1. We do ice cream, but I’ll buy and choose a brand with less junk (Breyer’s likely). 2. I offer a fruit sundae bar, lots of cut up fruit and homemade dairy-free chocolate syrup. This fits with the principal’s goal of offering “healthy options” at any event. I told my son we could mention that people could have a “naked sundae” like a naked burrito - the sundae with no ice cream, double fruit. He thought it was *hilarious* and I hope it’s a good way to encourage healthy choices. (And I’ll serve the portions of ice cream!) 3. We also put it at the end of the day, since that’s what the school handbook says about serving sweet treats. 4. And most importantly, since I’m buying, I get to come, which means I get ice cream too. ;) I think it’s a good example of working within the confines given by the school and also celebrating my son’s accomplishment. Wish we could just do fruit, or better yet, just an extra recess or an hour “read-in” party in the classroom (why not celebrate reading by reading more?), but I think “better” is all I can shoot for with the situation given. It’s not going to be inexpensive, so honestly, thank you all for using my affiliate links to shop and supporting KS, since without this income I wouldnt be nearly as comfortable offering to fund the celebration. I appreciate you guys!
