“The least among all of you is the greatest” (Lk 9:48) In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches the type of greatness a true follower of his should strive for. His disciples were arguing about this, mistakenly as usual. He corrects them with ‘a little child’, and without mincing words. If we look around us today we still see the mind-set of the disciples. Everyone is striving for the greatness the world has to offer, in some form or the other. In fact we find that many of us are willing to go to great lengths and do whatever it takes just to secure a position of honour and importance. This may not be visible on the face of it, but the Gospel reminds us that Jesus is ‘aware of (our) inner thoughts’. How many of us really live our daily lives according to the values of Christ? One such value is humility. Granted it is very difficult for us to become the least among others. But Jesus promises us the resources precisely to enable us to do this. He promises to be with us always along with another helper – the Holy Spirit. The problem is, not many of us are willing to depend on his promises and obey the Spirit’s promptings to live lives guided by real Christian values. FRUIT: Particularly when doing the work of God, let me examine whether I have allowed myself to remain the least or have sought to elevate myself.
