The liver is our big detoxification organ. Toxins are broken down - TopicsExpress

The liver is our big detoxification organ. Toxins are broken down by the cytochrome P450 enzyme system and done so in two steps. Phase I breaks down a chemical into something more manageable; Phase II binds it substances to neutralize it or to make it water-soluble so it can be excreted. We want both phases working in harmony and certain foods can increase the function but some can decrease this too. Copper, zinc, magnesium, vitamin C, E, and B vitamins are essential for Phase I while Glutathione, sulfur, glycine, SAMe, N-acetylcystein, B6, B12, and folic acid are needed for Phase II. But once the liver does its job, the lungs, kidneys, skin, and bowels handle the elimination. We should be kind to them too.
