The long-term unemployed will have to undertake work placements in return for their benefits, the Chancellor will announce today. It is expected that he will say "They will do useful work to put something back into their community; making meals for the elderly, clearing up litter, working for a local charity”. Is that fair enough, or does it disrespect people to give them menial tasks for below the minimum wage?
