The main reason I buy organic: Many people have heard of Chernobyl but few have heard of the Bhopal disaster. In 1984 Union Carbide, now owned by DOW, accidentally released a cloud of cyanide gas. The result was over 5,295 deaths immediately after the release and some 25,000 more in the years following due to complications including cancer. Today the site is still a toxic waste site and continues to poison local water sources. Union Carbide paid 500 millions dollars then turned the site over to the Indian government and washed their hands of it. The facility was manufacturing pesticides.
