Citizen Kane had already long been my favourite movie by the time I got to college. While at Sheridan College I was involved in a serious rear-end collision and was laid up at home for a few weeks. My Media Arts instructor Jim Cox arranged for me to have a 16mm projector and several movies to pass my time. One of these movies was a print of Citizen Kane. I watched it over and over again. I watched it frame-by-frame during some sequences and montages. It is a brilliant tour de force by a first time director. Welles never made anything approaching it again. The Magnificent Ambersons comes close, but it was taken away from him and recut, ending his movie-making independence. I would kill to be able to bid on some of this stuff.
