“The majority of women that cry and complain about their situations have no intention of doing anything about it. They’ll be in the same situation until the end.” That’s not true! I yelled back to the man that was making this very hurtful statement. “Well, Look at your situation. You’ve been treated poorly for years, and you’ve done NOTHING about it.” Ouch, I was busted. Maybe it’s time to take a step. As I started my journey to figure out “Why I was the way I was with men”, I sat down with my mentor and admitted, this was not my first dysfunctional relationship, I’ve had a few. She told me to think about all of my relationships and then find the common denominator in each of them. Yikes....it was ME! I needed to stop trying to change the men, and start thinking about changing me. One of the first things I committed to doing was reading and journaling. I’m not much of a reader, but I wanted to do the work! Here are the books that I read on my journey, in the order that I read them: Women Who Love Too Much: When you Keep Wishing and Hoping He’ll Change by Robin Norwood - It’s a good first read, because it’s eye opening but doesn’t go deep enough to scare you away from starting the journey. Codependent No More by Melody Beattie - I didn’t know what codependent meant, but I was quite sure I didn’t want it to be me. Then I googled it: “Codependency, by definition, means making the relationship more important to you than you are to yourself. It means youre trying to make the relationship work with someone else whos not. Ummmmm yea, that’s me. This book rocked me. Brené Brown is my favorite author! These 3 books changed me forever! I started reading her before Oprah found her :), but she’s now been on Oprah and is blowing up! - I started with her 3rd book, Daring Greatly. Then moved into Gifts of Imperfection. Then read I thought it was just me (but it isn’t) Making the journey from What will people think? To I am Enough. All So amazing! Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. This book’s message is “Your heart matters more than anything else in creation.” It dives deep into our wounded hearts. It was the most recent book I’ve read, and I believe we need to make it a mandatory read for every woman in the world! I am working on a book too, but until its out, I hope you will choose at least one of these and dive in! You are worth the work!
