I grew up with one of these including a hand pump and outhouse - TopicsExpress

I grew up with one of these including a hand pump and outhouse until my step dad put in a toilet and bathtub that we had to fill with pails of water to take a bath and flush the toilet with a pail of water from the large hand pump. We heated water for baths and dishes and washing clothes by hand on scrub board, on the wood stove in a large oval copper tank with handles on it. We baked tomato soup cakes and blueberry pies in the oven. I remember one side being baked faster than the other and had to be turned toward the heat. We picked the huckleberries and blueberries ourselves. We beat the cake dough in a large brown crock bowl and one day my little sister was licking the bowl and dropped it. We sold blueberries to buy another on like it for Mama before she came home. I remember Mama cooking eggs and pancakes and coffee steaming on the stove early in the morning and the aromas came wafting into my bedroom in the top bunk bed. I remember a large endlessly steaming kettle of water on the back burner. I remember cold mornings when we had to wait for the stove to heat the house. Us kids had to go collect kindling, and pine cones. We had to kill 10 flies everyday before we could go out to play.
