The month of April, National Autism awareness month. I vow to share something relevant each day this month. Some of you know our journey but for those of you who dont. 7 years ago we welcomed our son into the world. He came in with a bang....being delivered by emergency cesarean. Nothing was normal from the beginning. He cryed alot. ALOT. He rarely slept. And nothing we did seem to soothe him. Time passed and he continued to cry, he begin missing milestones. No cooing, little eye contact...and ultimately missing major milestones. Like sitting (10 months old )and walking (at almost 2). We knew in our hearts something was different. And what we knew all along was finally confirmed when he was 2 and a half. He was diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder and Global Developmental Delay. He started school on his 3rd birthday , attending a Sp. needs pre-k program. And we started a rigorous therapy schedule. Of speech, occupational, physical and Applied Behaviors therapies. We maintained this for over 3 years. Our baby who only spoke a few words has grown and flourished into a happy healthy curious little boy. Early intervention was the key to his growth. Without the therapies, I believe that he would still be trapped inside himself. At 7, he is still significantly delayed. But improving and learning daily. As my part of Autism Awareness I want to say, if you think something is different with your child. Do not wait! Speak to your pediatrician. And keep speaking until you are heard! Early detection and intervention is key to the success of our children.
