The more I learn about education, the more I realize that I am not - TopicsExpress

The more I learn about education, the more I realize that I am not a smart person. I am an average person who knows how to get good grades. And there is a very big difference between the two. I can work the system and abide by rules and read a syllabus. I can attend honors ceremonies and fill in the blanks by the book. It is a worthy capacity in some environments but it is also like going through life with an empty cup. I can transmit ideas, sure, but in the end, all Ive learned how to do is be a vehicle for the ideas of others. I am not very good at fixing things, or thinking non-linearly, and I sure dont adapt well to new situations. These are intelligences that I marvel at, and many of my friends often make me feel like Im the only one that showed up to the pottery class with no hands. Sir Ken Robinson makes an amazing argument in his TED Talk on education, please give it a listen if you have the time. After working with and educating members of both the industrial and academic communities, I notice a stark difference about how each group views themselves, and the opposing community. I cant tell you how many times Ive heard people say, Im not smart enough to go to go back to school, and it breaks my heart. There is not a biological, cultural or socioeconomic feature in a single human being that makes them unable to receive an education. It may be costly, or difficult, or time-consuming, but it is never impossible. Never.
