The more political, social, economic, religious, etc. commentary that I read these days, the more firmly I believe in this philosophy: I will have my beliefs, and I will take comfort in them, but I will not begrudge others for taking comfort in their own. There are billions of people in this world and I no doubt disagree with many, but if and when I choose to debate the merits of our ideas, I would much prefer to do so in a respectful discussion, and not resort to what seems to be the common principle of Maybe if I slander them loudly enough, theyll give in. You may not respect certain ideas. But respect the people that have them. Life is far too fleeting to waste your time with unpleasant feelings for others, and there are so many more pleasant things we can achieve.
