The most progressive way to respond to the hatred in the world is to have an intellectually honest discussion about the source—bad ideas lead to bad behavior. All books, especially those most revered ones, are written by human beings. The ideas in our books are human ideas—some of those ideas are brilliant, helpful, and healing, while many more are simply divisive. Religion is divisive, and the Abrahamic religions in particular each teach that the only viable path to a spiritual and ethical existence is to adhere to the tenants in their sacred books—an idea that is patently false. We are not at war with terrorists: we are at war with ideas, and every time we fire a shot instead of having a conversation we lose. The sooner we can acknowledge that truth, the sooner we can begin to unpack the problems we face and find solutions, restore the freedoms weve lost, and begin to build a more peaceful world for our children.
