The movie Mr. Bean’s Holiday aired recently and we watched it for the first time. If you get the Bean humour, and I certainly do, you’ll enjoy this priceless two-minute scene in which our accident-prone hero (played by Rowan Atkinson), stranded in the south of France with no money, decides to try busking for spare change. The soundtrack voice is that of the great German-Russian soprano Rita Streich, performing one of Puccini’s most famous arias. I interviewed Atkinson in September 2000, and discovered he’s an intensely serious intellectual, and a perfectionist with his craft – about as different from a fictional character as any comedic actor could possibly be. Born and raised in County Durham, Atkinson got a master’s degree in electrical engineering at Oxford, then turned to full-time acting, for which we should all be grateful. https://youtube/watch?v=Xnyvz99G8_c
