The myth of “Novorossiya” (New Russia) has been the central - TopicsExpress

The myth of “Novorossiya” (New Russia) has been the central focus of Russia’s propaganda war, accompanying its invasion of eastern Ukraine and numerous attempts to destabilize the country’s southeastern regions from the East’s Kharkiv to the southwestern Odesa. This large swath of Ukraine, as the story goes, was originally the domain of steppe nomads (including the fierce Crimean Tatars), conquered and colonized by Russians in the 18th-19th centuries, and then “gifted” to the newly-formed Soviet Ukraine by Vladimir Lenin’s Communist government in the 1920s. This myth has permeated so deep to the point that the Donbas separatist quasi-state has officially dubbed itself the “Federal State of New Russia” with its “founding fathers” laying claim to the entire historical region. This being said, history presents a few problems with this Novorossiya narrative that has already cost thousands of Ukrainian and an untold number of Russian lives.
