The name of the song thats always in my head is Misirlou. Dick - TopicsExpress

The name of the song thats always in my head is Misirlou. Dick Dale did probably the most popular cover of the song featured in the movie Pulp Fiction, but the song is much older than that. Wikipedia gives an earliest recording date on 1921, by Ottoman Greek Tetos Demetriades, but the elements of the music date back further with many Middle Eastern and North African people claiming it as their own. The name is a feminized for of Misirlis, a Turkish name literally meaning Egyptian from Egypt Nice, hunh? Martin Denny, the Father of Exotica made the song popular in the growing tiki-style trend as background music. There have been many variations the music, and different lyrics have been written and applied to it in the following years. My favorite story about the song is in 1962 Dick Dale was challenged to perform a song with only one string. His father was of Lebanese descent, and he remembered his father playing the song on his oud (like a Persian lute) on one string. He increased the tempo and later released it as surfer music in the US. There are so many versions that I want to post, but Ill do the most popular: Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, from the 1963 movie A Swing Affair
