The new Genndy Tartakovsky Popeye looks like a pretty good take on the character. Not as earthy as the Fleischer Popeye, and certainly a lot slicker. I cant help but think, though, that the hand drawn pre-viz artwork in this clip, including the hand drawn on the computer artwork, looks even better. To me the posing in the animated clip seems to be a bubbly shadow cast by the flatter, and much nicer, pre-viz artwork. Im certainly not against the use of computers in animation; Ive been doing it since the late 70s. But thats how I see this particular effort. Regardless, Im looking forward to this.
