The newly established Tsak Valley Unity Rugby League competition in Wapenamanda, Enga, has received a major boost towards its plan to be recognised by the PNG Rugby League with a donation of more than K100,000 by the Enga Provincial Government. The commitment to assist the competition which started last year with 12 teams was announced by Enga Governor who is also a keen rugby league supporter last Saturday. Ipatas, who walked about a kilometre to the newly constructed oval at the remote village of Pyasomanda in the centre of the valley to officially kick off the competition, told more than 1000 players and spectators to take sports seriously as it involved a lot of money. He said if young people, especially school dropouts, wanted to make a name in sport, they were required to give up bad habits such as smoking, the dangerous drug of marijuana and taking home-made beer to be disciplined towards becoming professionals. “If you want to be a real sport star, you are required to give up bad practices. You have to be committed and disciplined to develop sport as your career,” he said. Ipatas said he would allocate more funds to the competition if they made wise use of the K100, 000. League president Patrick Yanis said when thanking Ipatas that they would use the money to construct a proper road and improve the field. He said he would also use some of the money to put up two teams in the upcoming Coca Cola Ipatas Cup challenge to showcase talents towards promoting some of his players to the Enga Mioks club to play in the prestigious Digicel Cup next year. The teams that are taking part in the competition are Napi Riders, Tombeam Tigers, Central Sharks, K-Star Cowbys, Rocky Eagles, Kaiam Bees, Sambak Lions, Sikin Panthers, Talendu Broncos, Tapend Warriors, K-Dux and Topak Rangers.
