The news is not always happy. One of our researchers recently assisted in the rescue of a juvenile broadwing hawk who was dehydrated, emaciated, and too weak to use her legs. Concerned construction workers alerted wildlife rehabbers to the situation. The hawk was diagnosed with and eventually succumbed to poisoning—likely from eating a mouse or other rodent who himself died a miserable death from ingesting a rodenticide. Secondary poisoning is common in raptors and other predators of small animals. The more we the public know about these hazards the better prepared we are to eliminate them.
