The news of death of Kathak exponent, Sitara Devi has saddened millions of supporters who still have deep imprint of her dance style and sonorous voice of ‘Ghunghurus’ still ringing in ears. I have special attraction for Sitara Devi as I covered many of her events as journalist and common viewers. My eloquent tributes to her. Bihar, specially Patna has been the rare place where all top artistes, both vocal & musical ,craved for performance. The reason was that during Durga Puja, about half a dozen organizers would hold musical soirees where people virtually spent night on roads (Pandals) watching performance of Sitara Devi, Bismillah Khan,Birju Maharaj,Godai Maharaj,Lachhu Maharaj,V.G. Jog,N.Rajam,Anup Jalota,Jagjit Singh, Chaurasia.You name it & we have it. All of them performing in open whole night, otherwise public would have to spend hundreds of rupee as entry fee in closed auditorium. Sitara Devi often spoke of this specialty of Patna & praised the music lovers for spending whole night in open space, mind it two-third in standing position. Sitara Devi would come every year, later with age speaking on her she would come with her troupe.
