The next time you are having a bad day, and find yourself in a grocery store treating the checker like a rented mule that just so happens to be able to talk, and then get angry because they dont respond with a smile and a have a nice day! that they owe you. Just stop, because you are totally, and completely, wrong. Grocery store Checkers, waitresses, fast food workers, anyone that prepares, handles, or otherwise provides you with food in some capacity, are all fulfilling what has become a necessary service in the society we currently live in: they are doing a thankless and unforgiving job, that you wouldnt want to do on a good day, which provides you with the food you need to stay alive. They dont owe you a smile and a good attitude, you owe them one. Its not the various rules and policies of the companies they work for that require this of you; you dont work for those companies, and its not your job to enforce, or care about, their policies. It is the basic common sense and human morals of our culture which require you to be a decent and thankful person; smile and say thank you, because its the right and kind thing to do. No matter how bad your day is, that checker is having a worse one, I can guarantee it, and you need them to do that awful job so that you can eat.
