The next time you’re at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry - TopicsExpress

The next time you’re at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad, take time to smell and photograph the flowers and learn about medicinal and savory herbs. The spectacular gardens in the Village are a gift from the Genesee County Master Gardeners and the Genesee County Herb Society. About two dozen talented Master Gardeners design, plant and maintain the glorious displays of annuals and perennials that welcome you at the entrance and are spread throughout the Village all the way back to the Carousel and the dock for the Genesee Belle. There’s even a special vintage garden at the Buzzell House that includes the kinds of flowers and herbs that would likely have been grown back when this 1854 Greek Revival home was in its prime. The Master Gardeners also maintain three monarch butterfly gardens that are planted with native flowers, including two types of milkweeds, which provide the perfect habitat to attract and sustain the endangered butterfly. Supporting the Villages hands on learning experience, the Genesee County Herb Society offers each visitor a chance to learn about their ancestors’ use of cooking and medicinal herbs. Behind Dr. Barbour’s office on Railroad Street, you will find a variety of medicinal herbs that were used to sooth aches and pains. North of Dr. Barbour’s office, on Church Street, you may find the secret to Mrs. Eldridge’s tasty recipes in her herb, cutting and fragrant gardens. All the gardens are kept in top condition throughout the season and add a great deal to visitors’ impressions of the Village. In fact, visitors often tell us they stayed longer than they planned so they could take time to tour and photograph the unexpected gardens! We are grateful to the Master Gardeners and the Genesee County Herb Society who have been enhancing the grounds of Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad for more than 10 years. Get away right away and enjoy all the wonders of a 19th century village - including outstanding gardens - at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad!
