The Grange School, Northwich 6. The Kings School, Chester 7. The Blue Coat School, Liverpool 8. Stockport Grammar School 9. Birkenhead School 10. Bolton School Girls Division 11. The Queens School, Chester 12. Bury Grammar School for Girls 13. Lancaster Girls Grammar School 14. Merchant Taylors Girls School, Liverpool 15. Altrincham Grammar School for Boys 16. Merchant Taylors Boys School, Liverpool 17. Cheadle Hulme School 18. Chethams School of Music, Manchester 19. King Williams College, Castleton 20. Bolton School Boys Division Grammar schools that have an entrance exam are highly featured in the main table from which the above is taken. They have a strong presence in the region, led by those in Trafford. The best results in a state school are found at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls which is the biggest girls school in the country. The Sunday Times comments that with the two major cities of Manchester and Liverpool and affluent Cheshire there is a strong private school market in the northwest. Withington Girls School, in Manchester, is highly selective and successful in that more than 90% of its pupils go on to a Russell Group university.
