The official grand opening of the Athens-Limestone Public Library was held this morning. It included the unveiling of a portrait of the late Shelby Southard of Athens, who loved writing and who served on several presidential commissions, including as coordinator of the Presidents Urban Development Committee. In his will, Southard included a bequest to Athens to provide citizens with library services. The new library is located on Jefferson Street, south of The Square in the former Kroger building. It offers study rooms, computers, childrens area, community meeting room, teen room, and other services.
