The old Franklinton Cemetery. Established in 1799, just a couple - TopicsExpress

The old Franklinton Cemetery. Established in 1799, just a couple years after the town of Franklinton was laid out, this is the first cemetery in the area for the settlers. Like many things from the beginning of the town, Lucas Sullivant started the cemetery for the towns people, he also built the first church on this lot, and eventually, he was laid to rest here. His remains were later removed to be moved to Greenlawn. This cemetery had been forgotten, overgrown, and was falling apart, but was rediscovered, cleaned up, and has been maintained quite nice. I view this as one of Franklintons best kept secrets. I had been driving by it for years... 4 or 5 times a week... sometimes a lot more... never knowing what was there. Just a stone wall on the backside of a parking lot. Not only is it a well kept secret, but the place is so beautiful and so peaceful, that I find it to be a very nice place to just stop by and wander around. Looking at the names, they read like a Franklinton street map. Youll find many names in here that youll find familiar. Youll see war heroes, youll find families... one I always notice, is a woman who died giving birth, only for the baby to die shortly after. Even though that was common back then, it is still sad to see the story on the headstone today. Recently something happened that still has me slightly pissed. (pardon my mouth) This past winter... maybe towards the end of winter, I stopped by there and saw part of the wall had been knocked over. Looking at the distance the rocks were thrown, it was hit hard. I started to sift through the debris, and saw some parts to the vehicle that did this. Part of a square sealed beam headlamp (like in the early 80s) silver rigid plastic grid type grill, (very much like an older S-10) a black smoked bug deflector that you see on the hood of trucks... I am all but convinced it was an early chevy S-10... skid marks in the parking lot, Im just trying to figure how drunk and/or stoned they had to be to go this far through the intersection. Stop by... enjoy the cemetery, be respectful, (I always pick up trash and sticks/branches)... and if you know how to put together a stone wall... donate some time for the cause? The folder is of older photos I took a year or two ago. The ones attached here are from last winter and a few from last month. There is an iPhone map in the folder to show where this is located. https://facebook/media/set/?set=a.484046864987093.109779.384094268315687&type=3
