The old joke to this question is - practice, but 10 years ago over Memorial Day weekend I found myself walking through the doors of Carnegie Hall as tons of little school children were exiting after seeing a performance in the main theatre. I was alone in this grand historical place as I watched custodians on each balcony level picking up trash and men on the stage breaking down a set. Hmmm I then made myself to the stage and quietly asked a worker if it would be alright for me to just go out on the edge of the stage where that big X was and stand there. He said Go for it. I then asked him if he would be so kind as to take my camera and take a picture of me out there on that X mark. He then told me there was no photos allowed in Carnegie Hall. Well, I stood on that X mark, sang New York, New York and heard my voice ringing through this glorious theatre. As I ended the song the custodians in the balconies gave me an applause. I made it to the street before calling my daughters with the proud proclamation - I just sang at Carnegie Hall!
