The only way to truly understand God is to go to His Word and allow His Word to tell us about Him because we are not like Him. We are His creatures. And therefore, we’re dependent upon His word to explain to us who He is. Who said the above quote? Can you sense the overwhelming humility of it? Ill call it exaggerated humility. In fact, for most, the worshipful humility and reverence of the statement clouds the overall meaning of the statement. Lets look at the deception incorporated into this quote, by tricks of fallacy. And then you will see that the above statement is not actually about scripture at all, but stated in such a way that the understanding of God will be accepted as scripture by the hearer, but dictated by the understanding of the speaker. This is what is known as a set up. And you MUST use your mind, and reason, to see through it. The only way to truly understand God is to go to His Word and allow His Word to tell us about Him... because we are not like Him. First, notice that to disagree with this statement, you are required to claim that you are like God. Its worded in such a way, that you cannot disagree with the speaker without claiming that youre equal with God. And who would claim that? An tree worshiping pagan would not even claim to be equal with his god. The fact that one is not equal to God has nothing to do with the claim made, yet it is stated as the reason, ie because, the conclusion of the statement. That one is not equal to God does not require that you cannot understand anything about God. If the only way to truly understand about God is the Bible, then the understanding of God is limited usually to what ones Bible teachers tell them. If the speaker can get you to agree that Gods Word will tell us about God, then he can proceed to tell you what the Bible says as he sees it, and dictate his own world view into your mind. While the Bible is the Word of God, and all Christians believe this to some degree, the Bible itself says that Gods word is spoken by the heavens and the earth; the Bible itself says that God makes Himself obvious in the reality of all creation. The Bible itself says that the Holy Spirit testifies within us who He is. And so it is deceptive to pound on Scripture alone. What that really means, every time, is that they will dictate what scripture says, and define what that means, manipulating and redefining it. And without the reason of the mind, Gods word would have no meaning, thus Scripture alone, while sounding authoritative and pious, is meaningless. ...because we are not like Him. We are His creatures. This is a half truth, stated with a veiled exaggerated humility. While it is true that mankind is created, we actually are like Him. We are made in Gods image. No, I dont understand the full ramifications of that, but I can assure you that it is true in more ways than not, beyond our understanding. Yet it is stated in Scripture, and it is true. We do resemble God somehow, and moreso somehow than not. Not in power, ability, complete knowledge, etc. But in architecture, framework, structure, soul, mind, type. We actually are like God in many many ways, and so this conclusion is false. It is meant to influence the mind of the hearer to accept that they cannot know anything about God apart from the speaker, who will tell them what Scripture means. Yet Romans 1 says that everything that is knowable about God has been made plain/obvious by God Himself to all people in the things He has made - reality/creation. We were also made, and in the image of God. And therefore, we’re dependent upon His word to explain to us who He is. The speaker is now redundant, repeating his conclusion in such a way that it sounds true, so in agreeing with the conclusion of the statement, you have been tricked in your mind into accepting the deception that was weaved into the argument. I am not attempting to minimize the importance of Gods Word, which He esteems higher than His own name. I am showing you how the speaker is already dictating to you the meaning of Gods Word and making you dependent upon him, not God, for truth. Doing so positions the speaker to be the dispenser of Gods word, making his word equal with Gods word, while telling you that you are a mere creature that can know nothing. In this way, one accepts something taught about God by a man that contradicts things we see in every day life, and just gives up their mind to believe in a false equation, after which what follows grows in error. Most people will never in a 100 years understand why they are confused, and cannot retain the logic of these men, and end up giving up their minds to the teaching of these men with a trust that they somehow are so much closer to God than they, and have so much more access to Gods wisdom - but one has merely been intimidated into surrender, and not to God, but to the teachings of men. The above quote was by Dr. James White, deceiver extraordinaire.
